D[E]SIGN | MEASURING GUIDE
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR SPACE:
Sketch: A layout of the Room/Space on graph paper or plain white paper. Or draw it out in a program such as Publisher, Powerpoint or Keynote.
*Be sure to indicate on your sketch where there are windows, doors, closets and any pertinent items like a fireplace.
Create a Key: Label each wall A, B, C, D, etc. accordingly. Then Label each window W1, W2, W3, etc. and each door D1, D2, D3, etc. (see example).
*Please include your ceiling height on the Key!
Measure Exterior of the Room:
**Measure everything in feet + inches (for example 3’ 6”) OR if it is easier you can measure everything in inches for instance 3’ 6” would be 42”. Just please be consistent throughout your key!!
Start at the corner of WALL A and measure the entire length of the wall, corner to corner, and add these measurements to your Key.
Repeat for each wall B, C and D, etc. and add these measurements to your key.
*Be sure you have the total overall measurement of each wall.
**If your room is “wonky” you might want to add a measurement from opposite wall to opposite wall just in case.
Measure all the Interior Details:
Now measure each window width and height and add it to your Key.
Now measure all your doors and/or open doorways and add them to your Key.
Now measure anything else like a fireplace, closets, built-ins, etc. and add them to your Key.
Include Details: Be sure to indicate on your sketch any pertinent items like special molding heights or shiplap, wall sconces, electrical or TV outlets, radiators, etc.
Please also note if there is anything “odd” that might be difficult to see from a photo such as a wall bump out or pitch in the ceiling.
Send us your Sketch + Key: When you are finished either add these items to the folder we have provided you or email them to us here.
